Reader Stories: Why I Eat Low Fat

From Connie

I Eat Low Fat Because ...

I want to maintain my weight after having lost 34kg (75lbs) 2 years ago. I have realised you don't have to compromise on flavour to eat healthy. Most of my family is overweight and I did not see a good future for me. I want to set a better example for my family.

How Do You Eat Low Fat?

I make sure I look for the leanest cuts of meat, chicken etc & bulk up with lots of vegetables at meal times. I also eat low-fat versions of my favourite foods if they are available. I look for interesting recipes which seem to be high in flavour and low in fat and sugars. The variety in our meals keeps me motivated to stick with it and I have actually lost the taste for high-fat and highly sweetened foods (for the most part). I do a lot more of my own cooking and buy much less take-away. I avoid anything that's deep-fried, in coconut milk, and most desserts.

Advice

  • Eat more fruit & vegetables, either raw or cooked.
  • Look for the leanest cuts of meat you can find.
  • Cook your own meals as much as possible.
  • Drink lots of water, around 8 glasses a day is ideal.
  • Have a healthy snack in your bag at any time in case it's a long time between eating while you're out.
  • Involve your family with the healthy eating plan.
  • Eliminate or reduce food temptations at home. Don't buy them at all if possible.
  • Reduce cravings by choosing low-fat versions or substitute with something else.
  • Look for distractions from food, such as going for a walk, craft, etc.
