A Blessing in Disguise

Reader Stories: Why I Eat Low Fat

From Sheridan

I Eat Low Fat Because ...

In October of 1982 I was hospitalized for massive bleeding ulcers. Had to be given 8 pints of blood over the course of a few days. Back then doctors would push a bland diet.

After being on a bland diet for several months, my doctor told me I could introduce some of my regular foods back into my diet. Being from the south I was excited to be able to eat fried chicken and fried okra once again or my egg fried in bacon drippings. To my surprise, I could not eat it. It was sickening. All I could taste was the fat and not the food.

So what started out as an illness ended up being a blessing.

How Do You Eat Low Fat?

I avoid all fried foods as well as foods swimming in butter and lots of heavy cream. All this really does is disguise the way food should taste as well as big numbers when it comes to empty calories.

Even though I did not initially eat low fat for weight loss, losing weight is definitely a bonus that comes with it. Have also found that I just feel better overall which has also allowed me to be more active.

Advice

  • I don't deprive myself of anything because our bodies do need some fats in order to be healthy. So I use butter sparingly since I do prefer it over margarine, grape seed oil, extra virgin olive oil, flavored vinegars and nuts (will eat any kind that I have a craving for).
  • Being able to actually taste my food (lightly seasoned) was a real eye-opener. There's no going back for me.
