Low Fat Spicy Burgers

Fiona Haynes
Use extra-lean ground beef for these burgers to keep the fat content as low as possible. The onions and tomato sauce help keep these burgers moist, while the egg white helps bind the burger mixture together. Enjoy these spicy burgers with a cooling yogurt dressing at your next cookout.

  • 1 6-ounce pot plain low fat yogurt
  • .
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup no-salt added tomato sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 egg white
  • 3/4 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • .
  • 1/2 cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 whole wheat pita pockets

Preparation:

Add chopped mint to yogurt. Stir and refrigerate until ready to use.

Combine ingredients from onion through ground beef in a large bowl, mixing gently with a fork. When thoroughly combined, form 4 patties.

Broil or grill patties on a rack or pan sprayed with nonstick cooking spray and cook for about 5 minutes per side, to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

Warm pita bread according to package instructions, or pop on the grill briefly. Cut pockets in half.

Stuff each half with one cooked burger, and fill with sliced cucumber and tomatoes. Garnish with mint-yogurt sauce.
