3) Resveratrol and High Fat Diets

High doses of resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, grape juice and nuts, can protect against the health problems associated with high-fat diets—at least in middle-aged male mice.

Two out of three groups of mice were fed a high-fat diet where 60 percent of calories were derived from fat. One of the high-fat groups was also given very high doses of resveratrol. The third group of mice was fed a standard mouse diet.

Both groups of mice on the high-fat diet gained weight, but the group given large doses of resveratrol not only failed to show the signs of insulin resistance and fatty livers that developed in the other high-fat group, they also lived longer and more active lives—comparable to the mice on the standard diet.
