Charoset

The Seder plate contains five foods to remind Jews of their struggle for freedom. Charoset, which represents the mortar used by the slaves in Egypt, is a sweet dish to be eaten with matzoh crackers.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of apples
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 cup dates
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Zest of 1 lemon, chopped
  • 3 tbsp kosher red wine

Preparation:

Peel, core and slice apples. Place apple slices with walnuts, dates, raisins, spices, honey, lemon zest and wine in a blender and process. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Serves 8.
