The recipe for this basic pizza dough is virtually fat-free and delicious. Top it as you wish, but be sparing with the cheese and generous with the veggies.

This pizza dough, made with bread flour, is super-easy to work with, and routinely makes a 12-inch pie. You can, of course, replace some of the bread flour with some whole-wheat flour for an added nutritional boost. This may affect the texture a little, but the pizza will still be satisfying.

You can also add some dried herbs into the dry ingredients for added flavor.

Finally, you can make the dough ahead of time. After you have punched it down once the dough has risen, you then simply wrap in a floured plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 package active dry yeast (1/4 ounce)

  • 3/4 cup water, warm, 100 to 110 F

  • 2 cups bread flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. In a small bowl, mix together honey, yeast, and warm water. Leave for 10 minutes until frothy.

  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and stir with a palette knife until dough ball forms.

  4. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

  5. Form a ball and place in a lightly floured large bowl. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and damp tea cloth. Let dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  6. Remove dough from bowl and punch down on lightly floured surface.

  7. Roll into a 12-inch circle and place on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Top with favorite toppings and bake in a 450 F oven for 10 to 13 minutes or until golden.

Customize Your Pie

If your family is like most, pizza toppings can become a bone of contention when ordering in. You're better off making your own. This means you have control over the pizza's ingredients and can divide up a pie so that it caters to all tastes—more sauce, less cheese, more meat, fewer veggies. Equally important, you can serve it hot from the oven. It's a fun family project when one does the rolling and the others slice and dice.
