Near our house is a wonderful little dairy that sells the creamiest, most delicious ice cream that beats the pants off the premium commercial brands. Outside their store is a sign that counts down to the launch of a great seasonal flavor -- most recently, cantaloupe. The lines out the door on the sunniest of days seem to encourage more people to visit rather than less. Their ice cream is truly to die for.

But for those of us trying to eat low fat, ice cream is one of those foods we need to limit. Made with cream and sugar, it's a dieter's worst nightmare. Indulging occasionally is OK, so long as we try and stick to a small half-cup portion (which looks pitifully small, I grant you). But what about those low fat or light ice creams out there? Have you found a great brand that's almost as good as the real thing?

Honestly, no. Stick with the half cup of the richest “Real Thing” for satisfaction. In the end the calories are usually not that different as they have to replace the cream with starches and other fillers and the enjoyment just isn’t the same. The occasional high fat indulgence makes life more worthwhile.

Wal-Mart’s Great Value Brand Fat-free no sugar added vanilla and strawberry are actually both really good.
Blue bunny used to have a fat-free no sugar added fudge brownie that was incredible, but I haven’t seen it in a couple of years. Of course, I buy my husband the full-fat, real thing – and then eat more of his than he does!

Edy’s Slow Churned is really good – almost tastes like the real thing, in my opinion, only much less fattening. Also, I’ve heard that frozen custard has less fat than real ice cream (and tastes better, too!) but I’m still not sure about that one.

Uh, what about frozen yogurt? I don’t understand why everyone is not absolutely crazy over the fat free treat. To me, it tastes exactly like ice cream. Obviously, it is not in high demand because I can only find vanilla at the grocery store and none at all at convenience stores. You basically have to go somewhere like TCBY to get it handpacked (I’m not talking about the soft-serve variety)
