Meet Mon and Poly

In April 2007, as part of its campaign to educate the public about good fats and bad fats, the American Heart Association (AHA) introduced us to the Bad Fats Brothers. These bad boys, Sat and Trans, were painted as real "heartbreakers" because of their effect on LDL (bad) and total cholesterol. Part of the AHA's concern was that saturated fats were making a comeback as trans fats were gradually being eliminated.

Yet a recent survey conducted on behalf of the AHA showed that although consumers were aware that saturated fats and trans fats were bad for their hearts, less than half realized that unsaturated fats—or better fats—could reduce their risk of heart disease. With that in mind, the AHA is introducing us to Mon and Poly, the Better Fats Sisters.

The AHA warns that, while kinder and gentler, Mon and Poly are still members of the Fats Family, and are good for us only in moderation.
