Pizza Makeover

Monday June 6, 2005
Pizza doesn’t have to be loaded with fat. With the right ingredients it can be perfectly nutritious and healthy. For speed, start with a ready-made whole wheat crust, which you can buy in most grocery stores. Alternatively, use pita bread or low fat flour tortillas as the base. Choose lean meats, use plenty of vegetables and go easy on the cheese. Try reduced fat cheeses, part-skim mozzarella, or smaller amounts of strong flavored cheeses such as gorgonzola, feta and Romano.

Watch those portions, however. A 12-inch pizza is not meant to be eaten by one person. A wedge of pizza and a salad tossed with your favorite low fat dressing makes a great meal. Here are two ideas for delicious, low fat pizzas: Mediterranean Pizza and Mexican Pizza.
