Inside the Pomegranate

You must have seen those bottles of pomegranate juice at the grocery store. It seems to be the in thing. And why not? Pomegranate juice delivers more antioxidants than any other drink. Antioxidants protect our bodies against free radicals, the molecules that can cause, among other things, premature aging, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease.

With its tough exterior, the exotic and richly colored pomegranate looks a formidable fruit. But once you get the hang of prising out those sparkling jewel-like red seeds, you will be rewarded with a wonderful fall and winter fruit that can add something extra to your low fat salads, desserts, side dishes, and more. One medium-sized pomegranate yields 3/4 cup of seeds or 1/2 cup of juice.
